I used to use editing apps a lot several years ago when I had adult acne because I was embarrassed of how my skin looked in real life. But the more I edited my photos, the more self conscious I become in real life: "they must be looking at my skin", "they must know I edit my photos". And worse, what I saw in the mirror was different to what I'd see on my screen. That why I stopped editing my photos and letting other people alter my appearance in work shoots. For months people kept talking about how good the Paris filter is, but because I hadn't updated my Instagram for so long I didn't know what it was. Now I've updated it, I can see the appeal: it totally smooths out your appearance and covers fine lines and under eye bags. It's tempting! Here's a series of the same selfie: 1: natural (with makeup & good lighting) 2: FaceTuned 3: the Paris filter 4: the Oslo filter 5-8: various Instagram filters (lol at 8!) 9: what I see when I look at my phone 10: me in normal (bad lighting) and usually what I see when I look in the mirror without my ring light. If I'm always using photos 2/8 online it's no wonder I'd develop dysmorphia or hatred of my real face when what I usually see is 9/10. It's no wonder I'd start to judge my perfectly good 1st photo: "oh you can see my bags / freckles / spots" etc But also, if I'm always editing my photos, I'm giving other women who follow me a false image of who I am, which in turn makes them feel bad about themselves and potentially encourages them to use filters. Plus, the more we see a false image of ourselves the more insecure we feel with our real faces and that dysmorphia may lead to an obsession with fillers, Botox to try and achieve that "Instagram" look. This is why I personally don't use filters and editing apps. Anyway, sorry for the long ramble, but I'd love to know your personal thoughts around this? 🤳」7月24日 3時53分 - ashleylouisejames

Do you like the way you look offline? 💘
I've been thinking about all the filters available on Instagram (and other apps), and the way it effects our self love and acceptance of our faces.
