Photo by Stephen Alvarez @salvarezphoto The Blythe Intaglios are the most famous of the more than 200 giant geoglyphs incised in the Colorado desert near Blythe, California. The image’s scale is enormous. The largest of these two figures is more than 170 feet finger tip to fingertip. The glyphs are thought to be up to 2,000 years old. In 1932 pilot George Palmer rediscovered the engravings from the air while flying to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Not knowing an image's exact age is one of the mysteries of rock art. The immense scale of these images is intriguing. Why did the first Americans make images of this size, best seen from the air? We will likely never know. But the question drives us on. I started the nonprofit @ancientartarchive to share and preserve images like this.
