Photo by @catherinekarnow // A fishing boat plies the waters of Halong Bay, Vietnam. Long been the inspiration for poets and painters, Vietnam's treasure, Halong Bay, is an archipelago of over 3000 islands, made of limestone karsts. The islands, mysteriously sculpted by nature, resemble pyramids, pillars, cones, humans, animals. The locals refer to them as The Fighting Roosters, the Dog, The Turtle. Taken in 1994, this image is a scene you'll never see again. Despite being a UNESCO World Heritage site, Halong Bay has been virtually ruined by badly managed over-tourism, with an excess of tourist boats (painted white!), pollution, poor safety standards and so on. One can only hope that progressive reforms can restore some of the poetry of the place.
