ペイジー・クラッセンさんのインスタグラム写真 - (ペイジー・クラッセンInstagram)「I recently watched Ascend Pittsburgh's "Shadow of the Crag: A live discussion about climbing while Black", after a friend suggested it. The discussion featured Adeline Wright @adyclimbs, Payton Campbell @papayawerewolf, Ronnie Black @tallguybeta, Mikhail Martin @kaledoesit, Marcelle Bonterre @laanak08, Dominique Barry @thedommylama, Leah Dean @leahcmerchant, and Brittany Leavitt @bleavitt8, and was hosted by Donald DJ Grant @duppyhunter876x (thank you all for sharing!). I walked away with what I hope is a better understanding of Black climbers' lived experiences with prejudice and racism at the gym, at the crag, and beyond. Here are a few things I heard, that I as a white climber can help change in our climbing environments. Black climbers are forced to create their own space in places where they’re often the only Black person. The climbing gym is not always a welcoming place for Black and Brown climbers. It's also not a welcoming place for beginners. Many of the climbers in the discussion recalled having to prove themselves, explaining they weren't seen until someone perceived them as strong. This need to prove oneself or be the best in order to be seen is frustrating and exhausting. The constant assumption of white climbers that Black climbers need their beta and help, compounds these feelings of frustration and exhaustion. Here are a few things I can do to create space for Black climbers, so they don't have to create it for themselves. My words and actions must show that climbers of color belong in the gym, at the crag, and on the trails. The information or beta I share must hold humility, without assuming someone is new to climbing and needs my tips. While I'm not super outgoing, I love to cheer people on in the gym, no matter what grade they're climbing. Cheering for other climbers (without spraying beta) is a great way to strike up a conversation and make new friends. We're all out there, falling, all the time. Encouragement goes a long way.」7月16日 0時47分 - paigeclaassen
