Instead, I burst out laughing. With my youth climbing coach Michelle Hurni (@sheldon_the_mtn_dog) belaying me, I'm taken back to training sessions in the @estesparkmountainshop. I wasn't allowed to clip before taking a big deep breath, and Michelle enforced the rule with an intentional short rope until she heard my inhale. All these years later, those breathing exercises have played a massive role in my climbing. I use breath not only to stave off the pump, but also to distract my mind from doubts and fatigue. Most crags in Estes sit above 8,000ft, so there's really no option but to suck in all the air you can get and hope it's enough to recover and keep on cruising. A team ascent of this unique tower, Purple Heart (photos 1, 2, & 5; 5.12c/d, with a fun 5.5 up the backside) is another can't miss tick on the Estes list, and a great place to avoid crowds, especially during Covid. These super fun routes were bolted in the last five years by @jonathansiegrist, proving that in this little valley with so many rock climbers, there are still new lines to be had! Too cool to climb new-to-me routes in my hometown, with my childhood climbing coach and a mega view of Lake Estes to the north and Longs Peak to the southwest. Thanks Michelle for the fun day out! #VisitEstesPark #AthleteInResidence Photos by @arjandekock」6月19日 2時54分 - paigeclaassen
