A powerful precursor to Joan Miró’s famed ‘Constellation’ series of 1940, ‘Groupe de personnages’ was painted in 1938 after the artist returned to Paris from Barcelona in the fall of 1936. This energetic work exemplifies one of Miró’s most discerning periods in which he distorted the human form, making it both fantastic and monstrous. The canvas is populated by a parade of figures that are among some of the most vividly imagined of Miró’s entire oeuvre, the deft lines that delineate the figures reflecting the confidence of the mature artist.
