Realised around 1914, this striking work by Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler sees the artist experimenting freely with an expressive style and use of colour.
In a style reminiscent of the Fauves, Hodler applies the paint in thick, broad brushstrokes of vivid pigment. The bold outlines and the sitter’s pose are reminiscent of Egon Schiele’s work from the same period.
