Though he refused any formal association with Surrealism, Paul Delvaux was deeply inspired by the imaginative works of Giorgio de Chirico, René Magritte, Salvador Dalí and Max Ernst, and created a rich body of work renowned for hallucinatory scenarios and dream-like imagery. Painted in 1974 in his native Brussels, ‘L’Impératrice’ is characteristically ambiguous. His mastery at manipulating color is beautifully demonstrated as the subtle glow of the moon backlights the scene, leading the viewer’s eye toward the vanishing point. The static female figure contributes to Delvaux’s disconcerting atmosphere, and, in her trancelike stillness, evokes Renaissance ideals of timeless beauty. The scene as a whole takes on an unsettling incandescence, and the viewer is thus left to consider the oddities of this "twilight zone."
