René Magritte’s ‘La Projection lumineuse’ from 1961 combines two devices that the artist had first developed in the 1930s: the idea of a painting within a painting or a scene where a painting replaces part of the landscape, and separately, the idea of an object mirrored by itself in miniature. Here, the subject appears to be a landscape of trees with a ruined wall as its focal point. However, the miniature scene visible through the ruined wall is effectively a “projection” of the same image.
In drawing attention to the artificiality of his composition, Magritte causes us to question its existence — if the tree in the foreground is there, can the other exist? And if we perceive them as a double, or copy, which is the original?
This enigmatic and powerful work will highlight our Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale on 29 June in #NYC. Link in bio to learn more. #SothebysImpMod #ReneMagritte #Surrealism
