I have spent days trying to empathize, trying to relate, trying to feel and trying to know what to say and do. . Yesterday was the 11 year anniversary of my brothers murder and it’s forced me to reckon with my feelings about #justiceforgeorgefloyd in a new way. . I don’t know personally what its like to be born into systemic racism but I do know the heartbreak of watching a young boy (my brother) start out life disadvantaged when his father was killed by a drunk driver... I know what it’s like to watch that young man struggle to find his way in the world with out the guidance of a father only then to be killed by the gun of a white man full of anger and hate. . This experience has helped me empathize with the black community. . I know what it feels like to want to kill the person that killed my brother. I was filled with that SAME hate and rage at one point and had to made a decision: To choose love over hate. I CHOOSE LOVE. We chose forgiveness. . It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to grapple with but It was undeniable in my heart and in my head I knew that to perpetuate hate wasn’t the answer. . 11 years later my Mom, my sisters and I are “Victims of homicide”- a broken process where we have to relive the pain of my brothers murder with every parole board hearing we attend to make sure the person that killed him serves his time. This shouldn’t be our burden to carry, but it is. . It isn’t fair and the road we chose to travel won’t ever lead to true justice but it is one that will not perpetuate hate and that’s the right path to follow. . What I know and what I feel and What I don’t know... these issues are confusing and complex...it’s an every day work out in the mind gym to not to be reactive but meditative in our actions. . Feeling these feelings of outrage and heartbreak of injustice and hopelessness is important. But then... then it’s up to us to use our head to choose the right path. . When you are searching your soul for the answers always remember Dr. King’s words: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that” .
