This image uses one of eight specially designed "drawing apparatuses," which harness natural or chemical reactions to create striking, totally unpredictable works. Here, artist Fabian Oefner spreads salt and water across a sheet of paper, drives two copper nails into opposite ends of the paper, then connects the nails to an electric circuit. As the current branches through the paper, it leaves a burning trail in its path. “You just create all the ingredients, and the forces define the look of it," says Oefner.
