Bacteria had a glow up! This growing colony of fluorescent bacteria — dubbed “The Supernova” by synthetic biologist and TED Fellow Tal Danino — lights up only after it reaches a high density. Not only does it look cool, but this innovative use of microbes has enormous implications for potentially detecting and treating cancer and other diseases. “Like writing software, we can print and write DNA into different algorithms and programs inside of bacteria,” says Danino.
