When artist Laolu Senbanjo was a young boy, he was surprised to learn that his grandmother had not been born with her intricate tattoos. The beautiful black lines on her skin were actually symbols from Yoruba mythology, she told him. Later, as a struggling artist with little money for canvas, Laolu thought back to his childhood and began painting on bodies as a way to express his Nigerian heritage. His work now adorns bodies all over the world (you might recognize it in Beyoncé’s “Lemonade”) and is changing the way we talk about African art.
