Science journalist Victoria Gill calls axolotls "the Peter Pan of the amphibian world." Why? They're the one type of salamander that never “grows up” -- they never develop into adults. Northern Mexico's Lake Pátzcuaro is home to a rare axolotl breed called achoques, which are dying out due to overfishing and pollution. Enter: the Sisters of the Immaculate Health, who've made medicine with the achoque for centuries. With the species in jeopardy, their convent became a reserve of sorts for the endangered achoque. Now, after years of careful diplomacy, biologists are working with the nuns in an unusual partnership that could help save the rare creatures. “When scientists team up with, look to, and defer to people who have a really valuable perspective on what they're trying to do,” says Gill, “something really special can happen.” Watch Gill’s full talk on why scientists can — and should — collaborate with local communities at the link in our bio.
