Photo by @jonathan_irish | Not far from the Turkish city of Antalya lies Termessos, one of the greatest archaeological ruins I’ve ever seen. Alexander the Great, who didn’t bother to try to invade this strategically located city, once called Termessos the “eagle's nest” due to its precipitous perch 3,000 feet high on top of a mountain. To walk through this ancient city is to walk through time, passing ruined buildings, woodlands overtaking the fallen stones, and birds chirping in the crisp mountain air. The pathways, houses, and gathering places come to life as you wander through the scattered stones.
The highlight of a visit to Termessos is this incredibly preserved Roman theater. Can you imagine the views the spectators had while plays and orations were taking place in the round theater below? Although it is a bit of a trek to get here, I highly recommend a stop at this site during a visit to Turkey. Follow me @jonathan_irish for more images from around the world.
