Now that I have just a few weeks of shedding left to go, I can more confidently share the results of my experience with cold capping! Overall, I lost probably 50% of my hair - fortunately, not too visible along the top of my head. As some of you know from earlier posts, I was very anxious over the possibility of permanent hair loss from one of my drugs, Taxotere. Most other chemo drugs only cause temporary hair loss, but approx 6-13% of women on Taxotere lose their hair PERMANENTLY (as if cancer isn’t traumatizing enough!) So after a lot of research and back and forth, I decided to try my luck with cold capping. Cold capping is where sub-zero ice is applied to the head during infusions to prevent hair follicles from absorbing the chemo. It’s not comfortable or cheap…but it did the job! And most importantly, it relieved me of the anxiety of all my hair never growing back. There are several cold capping options. I chose Penguin Cold Caps and hired a cap specialist to apply caps on chemo days (this person can make a big difference in the end result...the heavy caps have to be monitored and changed every 25 minutes for about 9 hours, a tough job for a friend or partner!) I’ve also heard Dignicaps work well and are easier since they are machine operated/don’t have to be changed. I’m also curious if anyone’s results with Paxman @scalpcooling. For whatever reason, cold capping is not as well known in the US as Europe, and the service is rarely covered by insurance. I’m hoping that will change, until then, I’ll be writing letters to all the major insurance companies because patients shouldn’t NOt have this option due to finances. Ok, that’s my update! To all the beautiful ladies out there going through treatment, hair or no hair, I know how awful this whole thing can be but sending you love and light and a big bear hug. Keep up the fight. 💕 #octoberbreastcancerawareness #breastcancer #breastcancerawareness #breastcancercare #coldcapping #penguincoldcaps #dignicap #coldcaps #coldcapssavedmyhair #chemocoldcaps #chemotherapy #taxotere #carboplatin #her2positivebreastcancer #scalpcooling」9月30日 9時24分 - tarynsouthern
