Executed in 1999, ‘John Kennedy Jr. Meets Queen Elizabeth II’ is a captivating example of Elizabeth Peyton’s depictions of celebrities. Although a number of Peyton’s works are done directly from life, the artist takes advantage of wide-ranging source material such as film stills, print media photographs, and iconic artworks. In the present work on paper, Peyton captures the moment that a young John F. Kennedy Jr. - alongside his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis - met Queen Elizabeth II, during the inauguration of Britain’s Kennedy Memorial at Runnymede in May 1965.
