It’s the first day of Shark Week, and we’re kicking things off the best way we know how—with fossilized shark teeth! When it lived 10 million years ago, Carcharodon megalodon would have dwarfed even the whale shark in size. Like modern sharks, this ancient shark’s skeleton was made of cartilage, but its fossilized teeth survived the test of time. Fossilized Carcharodon teeth are found all around the world, but some of the best preserved are from North Carolina, like those exhibited in the Museum’s Hall of Vertebrate Origins.

Every time I go there and stand underneath those jaws I get the chills! Super cool.

So are those jaws the real deal or a plaster-cast job?
