The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is a very social animal. It lives in a pack that has an organized social system; packs typically consist of 10 individuals, but can sometimes be over 40 members strong! Cooperative living increases hunting success, as well as the wellbeing of the pups and overall pack. Group coordination is key when taking down large meals like a wildebeest or zeroing in on one gazelle in a large herd. Unfortunately, this canid is threatened by loss of habitat, diseases spread by domestic dogs, and conflicts with humans that result from attacks on livestock.
