Work by the elusive German painter Wols is astonishingly rare; it’s estimated that the artist created just 80 works on canvas in his short lifetime.
-
The present example is exceptionally large and offers a harmonious synthesis of colour and mark making - the vibrant horizontal red lines stand out angrily against the complementary green background, and drip marks run in all directions which indicate that the artist turned the canvas as he worked on it.
-
Dating to 1946-7, ‘Vert Strié Noir Rouge (Green Stripe Black Red)’ is considered a pioneering early example of the Tachisme movement – a French style of painting which is considered to be the European equivalent to American Abstract Expressionism. Though largely unrecognized during his lifetime, Wols’ work is today found in major museums worldwide.
-
The work will be offered in #SothebysContemporary Art Evening Auction on Wednesday night.
