Mother of Dragons 🐉: Charming and beautifully executed, this extremely rare silver and gilt-metal octagonal watch carries over 400 years of history. The timepiece features a gold and green enamel single hand in the form of a lizard, as well as being covered in love tokens and carrying a coat of arms to the inside of the panel. Whilst the hinged inner panel dates to 1597 - indicating that this year was of significance to the original owner - the shape of the case and the style of decoration points to a production date of around 1620. The fact that the watch may have been made around 25 years after 1597 suggests it was some form of anniversary token.

This timepiece from the Masterworks of Time sale on July 2 in London sits against ‘Saint Donatus Chastising the Dragon’ by Sano di Pietro, the most popular and prolific artist in Siena, Italy, during the fifteenth century. The subtly coloured painting will also be offered in London on July 3 as part of our Old Masters Evening sale.
