サザビーズさんのインスタグラム写真 - (サザビーズInstagram)「A fantastic example of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s unique visual language, ‘Big Snow’ is scattered with a cacophony of symbols and cultural references. - The canvas pays homage to the great sporting legend Jesse Owens, who brought home four gold medals in the controversial 1936 Olympic Games in pre-WW2 Berlin. Inspired by his gritty determinism in the face of adversity, Owens came to symbolise the triumph of goodness over evil, but also the outdated, oppressive, and ongoing obstacles surrounding race and inequality in 1980s America. - To the left, Basquiat has drawn a bionic-looking foot, hinting at Owens’s machine-like power. Basquiat explored human anatomy throughout his career after he was hit by a car at the age of seven, following which the artist’s mother gave him a copy of Gray’s Anatomy. - The white of the canvas and the title of the work, ‘Big Snow’, were inspired by the artist’s excursion to St. Moritz and the sparkling Alps around him.
