LeBron James opened a school that was considered an experiment. This time last year, the students were identified as the worst performers in the Akron public schools and branded with behavioral problems. Some as young as 8 were considered at risk of not graduating. Now, they are helping close the achievement gap in Akron. The academic results are early, and at 240, the sample size of students is small, but the inaugural classes of 3rd and 4th graders at LeBron James’s I Promise School posted extraordinary results in their first set of district assessments. 90% met or exceeded individual growth goals in reading and math, outpacing their peers across the district. Unlike other schools connected to celebrities, @ipromiseschool is not a charter school run by a private operator but a public school operated by the district. Its student population is 60% black, 15% English-language learners and 29% special education students. “We are reigniting dreams that were extinguished — already in 3rd and 4th grade,” said Brandi Davis, the school’s principal. “We want to change the face of urban education.” @maddiemcgarvey took these photos of students, teachers and staff at I Promise in Akron, #Ohio.
