Imagine a world before FaceTime. In 1964, our photographer Sam Falk shot this photo of a boy using the “Picturephone,” which debuted that April at the New York World's Fair — a celebration of things to come. “While this might sound like something out of 1984, it is far from that,” #nytimes reported in 1965. Of course, there were limitations. To use a Picturephone, you had to go to an air-conditioned booth at Grand Central Terminal in New York, the Prudential Tower in Chicago or the @ナショナルジオグラフィック Building in Washington. And there was no time for small talk: A 3-minute “see-as-you-talk call” between New York and Chicago cost $27 — the equivalent of more than $200 today — plus tax. Each additional minute: $9.
