Painted in 1956-66, Marc Chagall’s ‘Le Paysan’ is an enchanting, dream-like vision that illustrates his passion for color and light. The canvas depicts some of the artist’s most emblematic motifs, such as violins and floral bouquets, and is a testament of his appreciation for this second wife, Valentina ‘Vava’ Brodsky, who he wed in 1952 after only a few months of dating. The artist signed the work ‘Pour Vava’ on the reverse of the painting.
