“Even though I left the village in my early twenties, I nevertheless carried all along inside of myself, the footprints of the village left in my soul.” Modernist #artist Mamdouh Ammar was utterly allured by the charm and mysticism that shrouds much of #Egypt’s provincial cultures and past, paying homage to the traditional and rituals through his brushstrokes. Born 1928 in #Beheira, a coastal #governate that brims with history, Ammar was heavily influenced by his environment.
This hauntingly work from 1982 depicts a desolate dusty landscape that shrouds the protagonists, who wear stark white galabeya, in an eerie atmosphere. ‘Contemplations’ will go on view in our #London galleries from 26 April, ahead of our 20th Century Art / Middle East #auction on 30 April.
