Speaking in Dance | “This piece is so Graham,” said Lloyd Mayor of Martha Graham’s “Secular Games,” from 1962. “You don’t entertain and perform for an audience. You’re in your playground and the audience happens to see it.” The feeling behind the dancing? “Lightheartedness,” @lloydamayor said. Presented by @marthagrahamdance at the @joycetheater through April 14, the work, which hasn’t been seen in New York since the mid-1970s, looks at sexual stereotypes. This all-male section, with music by Robert Starer, is set on what Graham called a Socratic island. “Everybody has their own say about a different topic,” said the dancer Lorenzo Pagano. “And the topic is the ball.” (Which they try not to drop, but, hey, it happens.) Janet Eilber, the company’s artistic director, felt it had aged enough to be reconsidered. “15 years ago, it was still kind of ‘those old dances,’” she told the #nytimes writer @giadk. But “it’s vintage now rather than just old.” @mosadek made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
