Lori Lightfoot, a 56-year-old former prosecutor, made history Tuesday when she won the election to be Chicago’s next mayor. When she takes office in May, replacing Rahm Emanuel, she will be the city’s first black woman and first openly gay person to serve as mayor. @lightfootforchi, who has never held elective office, easily won the runoff race, overwhelming Toni Preckwinkle, a better-known, longtime politician, and turning her outsider status into an asset in a city with a history of corruption and insider dealings.
