Sat down yesterday for an interesting dialogue with the Owners Forum, an international group of family business owners. The members own large, multigenerational and global family enterprises.

One participant asked: In ten years’ time, how would I measure Singapore’s success, socially and economically? I said I hoped that 10 years from now, we will still have the same spirit of wanting to go forth and do something, the same sense that we have to be better than others in order to be equal to others, the same instinct to help one other to move forward together.

One warning indicator to watch out for: whether we have lowered our guard, and forgotten that as a small country living in a dangerous world, we will always be vulnerable, and must rely on our wits to make our living. We have lived in peace and prospered for half a century since independence. We must not let this seduce us into thinking that now we can relax, and take liberties.

My thanks to the Owners Forum for inviting me to speak to them. – LHL (With Simon Tay, chairman of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, who moderated the dialogue. / MCI Photo by Clement)
