There’s a growing cultural divide between hip-hop’s younger and older stars. Some say @ybncordae can bridge it.
Last spring, the 21-year-old emcee, whose real name is Cordae Dunston, analyzed hip-hop’s generation gap in his viral song “Old N—.” It established him as a spokesman for rap’s new wave and its music video has racked up more than 11 million views on YouTube.
His musical style fits in with the contemporary SoundCloud crowd which favors a raw, genre-blurring sound, yet he spits old-school rhymes and writes thoughtful lyrics that appeal to hip-hop traditionalists.
@robmarkman, head of artist relations at @genius, a lyrics and music intelligence site, cites him at “the top of my list, as far as newcomers.”
“He’s the type of artist who can deliver a hip-hop classic,” he says. “An artist who can be around for 20 years.”
