For many girls, figure skating ⛸ is losing its edge to hockey?. Girls' enrollment in the sport has grown 25% from five years ago, and doubled since 2000, with about 61,000 girls 18 and under playing in the 2017-18 season, according to @usahockey. That outpaces growth in boys’ participation, which has declined slightly since 2000. ⠀

Eight-year-old Sara Caldicott of Chevy Chase, Md., learned to skate shortly after she could walk. Her mother enrolled her in figure skating when she was 5, and after class one day the two went to watch a competition at the same rink where she practiced. ⠀

"They were in their outfits and the makeup," recalled her mother, Lesley. "Sara turned to me and said, 'I'm never going to wear a dress like that.'" Shortly after, she switched to hockey. ⠀
