A deadly tornado tore through southeast Alabama on Sunday, killing 23 people, including several children. Rescue efforts resumed Monday morning as the number of missing is still in the double digits.

Residents described confusion and families being separated as the deadly tornado roared quickly through Lee County. "It looks almost as if someone took a giant knife and just scraped the ground […] I have not seen this level of destruction ever in my experience here in Lee County," said County Sheriff Jay Jones.

Most of the damage is in the Beauregard community, south of the city of Opelika. Kaitlyn Willing, who lived in Beauregard until about a year ago, said the area that was hardest hit has many mobile homes. "The people were like sitting ducks," she said.
