For more than two decades, master carpenter Greg Zanis has made thousands of memorials for victims of every major shooting from Columbine to the Pittsburgh synagogue.⠀

Mr. Zanis, 68, has crafted crosses, Stars of David and crescents for victims of mass shootings, as well for victims of natural disasters like the wildfires in Paradise, Calif., urban gun violence and terrorist attacks like the Boston Marathon bombings.⠀

He made his latest memorials for the five people killed in a mass shooting at a factory in his own hometown of Aurora, Ill., on Feb. 15.⠀

"I don't know what's wrong with me, I just never thought it could happen" here, he said.⠀

Mr. Zanis started the ritual in 1996 after a woman whose son had been killed came to him with a request to make a cross.⠀

Altogether he has created more than 26,000 memorials, marking them down in a book with the deceased's name, a serial number, and the date and location of their death. He makes at least two for each victim: one for public display and another for their families.⠀
