After Michelle Obama wore a gown by @ジェイソンウー to her husband's inaugural ball in 2009, the young designer was set up to become the next star of the American fashion industry. But things didn't turn out that way. "I'm totally not where I thought I would be," the 36-year-old said. “When you dress very, very prominent women, it does give people the false impression that you’ve already made it." Expectations were high for young American designers of Mr. Wu's generation, but a number of labels that launched in the 2000s have struggled to reach the next level. Luxury-goods sales slumped in 2015 and 2016, and many consumers shifted their spending from luxury fashion brands to experiences such as travel.

Mr. Wu is overhauling his business by adding lower-priced items to attract more shoppers. He is also appearing in ads for a banking app and will be a guest judge on @rupaulsdragrace. He has taken a year-long break from elaborate runway shows, he said, because he is "tired" of the formula and is reassessing his business. "I've been able to think about the future of the company in a more sober way now more than I have ever before," he said.
