Singer, actress and author @jeniferlewisforreal was a star even at 5.

That's when the @blackishabc actress received her first standing ovation, after singing at church in her hometown of Kinloch, Mo. "I had the entire congregation in the palm of my hand," she remembered.
The youngest of seven children, Ms. Lewis, 62, grew up in what at the time was one of oldest all-black, self-governing municipalities in the country, dating back to 1890.

Today, her home in the Los Angeles area includes a room devoted to her childhood with 40 framed photographs on the walls. "My favorite is an image of the house where my mother was born. It was just a shack," she said. "Sitting in the room with all of those photos makes me feel content—almost like being back in my mother's lap."
