Alexandra Waterbury's world exploded after she filed a lawsuit in September against the New York City Ballet and her ex-boyfriend, a former principal dancer with the company.

The 21-year-old's complaint described “the worst nightmare of every woman,” alleging that her ex-boyfriend had been secretly recording and photographing her while the two were engaged in sexual activities, and distributing those recordings and pictures without her knowledge to fellow NYCB employees and even a donor.

For three years, Waterbury danced up to 36 hours a week, graduating with an offer to turn pro. Today, her professional dance career is over. "I think that’s what I would want [my legacy] to be," she said of being the only dancer to publicly come forward and to use her name in what has since become a major part of the ballet world's #MeToo reckoning. "No matter how hard it is, or if it doesn’t necessarily benefit you…do the hard thing." Read more at the link in our bio. ?: @heathersten for @wsjmag
