The pesky but essential hospital ID bracelet is getting a makeover.⠀

A shield-shaped adhesive strip that can be stuck almost anywhere on the body is being tested on 50 neurosurgery patients at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. ⠀

"The Shield" is wider than traditional bracelets so patient information is more legible, reducing the risk of errors, according to Dr. Peter Costantino, chairman of head and neck surgery at Lenox Hill, who invented the adhesive. It can be attached to a patient’s arm or foot, and the doctor plans to test if it collects fewer germs than wristbands. ⠀

The strip was inspired by Mr. Costantino’s wife, Laurie, who spent time in the hospital for complications from brain-cancer surgery.⠀

“The wristband always makes you feel that you are sick,” she said, “that you are a patient.”⠀
