When Phil Hoon’s grandfather was selling Fords in 1954, the same year the car maker debuted the Thunderbird, his dealership on Maryland’s Eastern Shore got a single model that found its way to his grandson two decades later.⠀

The original buyer sold the T-Bird in 1974 to Mr. Hoon’s mother, who passed it on to her son. He's kept it ever since.⠀

“My two sons, both now in their 30s and living about an hour from me, grew up with this car in the garage,” said Mr. Hoon, an attorney from Chestertown, Md. “It was there before they were born, and they love it.”⠀

In the early ‘50s, before foreign cars like Porsches and Mercedes had made it to American roads, Ford rolled out the Thunderbird to compete with Chevrolet’s Corvette. ⠀

This T-Bird came in a shade of blue, but Mr. Hoon had it painted snowshoe white—one of the model’s original colors. He also rebuilt the engine. ⠀

“When you drive the car, it is like an event,” he said. “You don’t want to turn on the radio, because you want to hear the sound of the engine.”⠀
