J.E. was kidnapped in South Texas by a Border Patrol agent when she was 14. He raped her in his apartment and later committed suicide. “I didn’t know what to do,” J.E. said. “My feet were tied up. I would look at him and he had a gun. And that frightened me.” J.E. is 1 of 8 migrant women from Central America The New York Times interviewed who was sexually assaulted between 2013 and 2016. On America’s southern border, migrant women and girls are the victims of sexual assaults that most often go unreported, uninvestigated and unprosecuted. The Times found over 100 reports of sexual assault of undocumented women along the border in the past 2 decades, a number that most likely only skims the surface, law enforcement officials and advocates say.
