This installation, called “Organic Concept” by artist and @TEDFellow Shih Chieh Huang, is made out of fragile painters’ plastic. The delicate material breaks easily when people touch it, but that’s what Shih wants to happen. Each time there’s a tear, the tubes need to be re-tied. “The more you tie, the more the shape changes, and it gets smaller and smaller until it’s eventually destroyed. That’s why I call it ‘Organic Concept.’ It’s fluid; it’s not set,” Shih says. His work takes trash, mundane household items, or random electronics components and turns them into kinetic structures, inspiring us to examine our relationship with the objects around us.
