You can find these man-made 80-foot ice towers in Ladakh, an arid region in India. Made from glacial meltwater, they’re called “ice stupas,” and they serve a very specific purpose. Ladakh receives less than 2 inches of rainfall over the course of the year, so the farming communities in the area really rely on glaciers for their water supply. The problem is, due to climate change, glacial streams are beginning to dry out before the summer even starts. But with these ice stupas, engineer Sonam Wangchuk found a way to maintain a steady flow of water all year long. The stupas preserve the H20 until May, when they melt and send a stream of water through a pipe down the mountainside for the farmers who need it most. To learn more, visit go.ted.com/icestupas
