Nestled among the streets of Dharavi, one of Mumbai, India’s largest makeshift neighborhoods, is a tiny pushcart museum. It’s filled with bright, colorful vases, chai cups, cricket bats, and more created by artists from the community. The museum’s founders, curator Amanda Pinatih and @TEDFellow artist Jorge Mañes Rubio, curate pieces that reflect Dharavi's vibrant visual culture. They hope to challenge the notion that these informal settlements are problematic “slums,” rather than a vital part of the society’s fabric. “Sometimes visitors would say: ‘I can’t believe these are made in Dharavi!’” says Amanda and Jorge. “If objects are carefully made, people will get interested in the stories behind them.” To learn how you can create your own museum that showcases a neighborhood’s art and spirit, visit go.ted.com/mobilemuseum
