So how was my retreat at @theranchmalibu ? . Intense. The main activity is hiking. Then there is more exercise, yoga, nutrition. It’s really physical. Challenging 4 days... . Hike 1: scared. Who are these people? Why am I here? Let’s go on a hike. Meet people. Test out gear (yes sports gear gets real when you’re actually doing sport with it ?). Ok people are nice. This is pretty but we’ve been hiking for 2 hours and a half. Can we go back? . H2 : excited & challenged. I got this. Easy! WTF - this elevation is intense!!! I’m hot, sweaty, and I... Oh the view is stunning! I love this! Hiking is my new passion. Muscles are sore. But I just walked 11 miles at a fast pace - I’m a hero. . H3 : woop, let’s go! And... eeeh okay. Am I bored? Ok one foot in front of the other. Listen to music (not recommended) and just do it, dreaming about lunch. . Interlude: 1400 calories / day at that level of exertion can sound crazy - but the food was so nutritious i wasn’t hungry. Taught me so much about real food and portions! Real ones! Not the gigantic plates we eat usually. Reminded me about pleasure. Of eating when you’re hungry. Of having just one bite. My body was saying thank you. . H4 : no. Nonono. Is it raining? Eeeeeeh it’s LA rain. It’s nothing! Oh no. Nonono. It’s pouring. I’m damp. Freezing. I’m hiking in a cloud I can’t see anything. I am alone. Do I have my walkie? Yes okay. I want a bath. I want a coffee. I want my mooooom!!! Why am I here!? Been hiking for 3 hours in slushy mud. I hate this. I am going to fall and die. I’m too far to go back. Wait. What if... I enjoyed the rain on my face, found a way to de-freeze my hands and go with the challenge? Go, breathe, do it. You’re safe. Go beyond. . That hike became the best one - quite cathartic. I like that the guides didn’t shy away from the rain and mud and let us go. That’s knowledge and courage. . I came back home with a clarity I haven’t felt in months. It’s not about the retreat itself, but the retreat pushed me to get out of myself and my ways. How often do we have the chance to do that? . And to just walk, alone, on a healthy high, in the beautiful, beautiful nature?
