Dozens of ordinary Afghan men — day laborers, farmers, retired army officers, a polio victim on crutches and others — marched for peace through southern Afghanistan in June of 2018, calling for an end to 4 decades of war in their country. Now, as peace negotiations are underway between American and Taliban officials, 2 #nytimes reporters from Afghanistan began pondering this question: “If there were peace, what’s the first thing you would do?” They asked their friends the same question. “I’ll light a fire and sit around it with my friends during the night,” said Rafiullah Stanikzai who works at @usipeace. “I could never do that now.” ⁣⁣

“Even if there were a peace deal, we know implementation would be a long way off, months at least, more likely years. And it’s entirely possible the end result would mean a Taliban in control of the places we would like to go, or even in charge of ministries that would try to tell us where to go,” our reporters write. “Still, like so many people, both friends and enemies, we were caught up in the hope of an unprecedented moment.”⁣⁣
