How fortunate we are that 40 years ago, Dr Goh Keng Swee founded the @singaporesymphonyorchestra! Our Founding Fathers believed that a young nation needed to look beyond pressing economic issues, and nurtured in Singaporeans an appreciation for culture and the arts. And thus, the SSO came to be.

40 years on, the SSO is a thriving fixture in our cultural scene. Yesterday’s anniversary gala concert was an emotional and joyous tribute to the SSO's inaugural performance in January 1979. They played 2 pieces from that very first concert – Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “The Emperor”. They also played Leong Yoon Pin’s Dayong Sampan Overture, the first Singaporean composition they ever played (in 1980). The year-long celebration continues with free performances around Singapore. I hope you will catch some of them, and hear for yourself why the SSO enjoys such acclaim both here and abroad.
