For Ed Welburn, the retired head of global design for @generalmotors, what started as a chance meeting outside a California Starbucks ended with him buying this 1957 Corvette—from none other than baseball legend Reggie Jackson.⠀

After running into the MLB hall of famer outside the coffee shop in 2016, the two went back to Mr. Jackson's garage, where Mr. Welburn came face to face with his future ride and discovered it was for sale.⠀

"I call my 1957 Corvette the most expensive cappuccino I have ever purchased," Mr. Welburn said.⠀

The model—one of only 65 silver Corvettes made in 1957—was designed in large part by his hero, the late Harley Earl, who was the first to run an organized automobile-design studio in America.⠀

"[Harley] died in 1969 and I never got to meet him. But when I became head of design at GM in 2003, I sat at his desk, and I had his office," said Mr. Welburn, 68, who lives in Bethlehem, Pa., and Detroit. "In many ways, I feel like I know him intimately."⠀
