During the last few decades, elaborate pre-wedding #henna ceremonies have regained popularity in Israel's Yemenite Jewish community, years after the tradition faded in the drive to assimilate. At the ceremonies, women paint designs or place dye onto the skin of the bride and her guests. Brides and grooms also wear rare and costly garments — dresses with jewelry start at about $14,000. Yafa Yehuda, a henna event planner, said the ceremonies have become popular because young people wanted something different and viewed previous generations with a sense of nostalgia. At a recent ceremony, Meyrav Yehud, a 24-year-old bride, was outfitted with a tashbuk, a tall cone-shaped headpiece traditionally made of pearls and flowers and accessorized with silver and gold jewelry. It was “heavy and it hurts,” Meyrav said. But she added, “It’s why you do the henna; it’s an experience.” @malinfezehai shot this photo of Meyrav. Visit the link in our profile to see more.
