Anyone wondering why La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, is a @unesco #worldheritagesite or why it’s credited with establishing the country as a center of #watchmaking need only go to the outdoor terrace of the Espacité office tower in the city center and look down. There, about 200 feet below, is the reason: The town was built on a grid of wide streets, and its stucco townhouses, terraced up the side of a hill, have garden spaces in front. It was designed for the glory of time. After a serious fire in 1794, the town fathers hired a local engineer to rebuild it in a way that favored the primary industry: watchmaking. At that time, the townspeople specialized in making different watch parts, jointly creating them through a shared production system, called etablissage, started in the 1600s. The wide streets allowed carriages to always clear snow, and the townhouses’ stoops meant front doors would always be accessible. The open space in front of each home ensured that as much natural light as possible could enter the workshops throughout the year. Today, many of the big names in watches, like @カルティエ and @タグ・ホイヤー, have their offices and warehouses nearby. @claratumaphotography took this photo from the Espacité tower.
