“This is so hard. I can’t.” Cing Kim had been trying to get over the same section of rock for 10 minutes during a recent climbing trip in Washington. “Whenever things are hard, we try again, right?” her instructor advised. It’s a lesson she hoped Cing — and her 2 best friends Cing Sung and Cing Lun who were also on the trip — would remember not just while climbing but also in life. All 3 girls are refugees who are settling in the U.S. after they fled Myanmar. The climbing trip was hosted through the Climbing Higher Stonemasters Program, a rock-climbing program, organized by @theIRC and supported by the Neediest Cases Fund, for refugee children that connects children with mentors and uses climbing to teach them life skills. And the girls have another powerful support system too: each other. “My first day of school, there was nobody to help me. It was only me and my brother. I wanted to help out so they don’t get scared too,” says Cing Kim. Their story is just one of many highlighted in our Neediest Cases Fund, our annual campaign to provide direct assistance to those who are facing tough times.
