“When I’m rapping I am transported into another world,” said Yadira Cruz Garcia, a mother of 2. Yadira is the only woman in a rap group called Cascos Calle 7 and is also a part-time cook. She is part of a tight-knit group of women who are rapping as a way to draw attention to issues like poverty, gender inequality and disenfranchisement of indigenous communities. They are shaping the rap scene in #Oaxaca, Mexico, which has been dominated by men since it was first established in the 1990s, influenced by United States rappers. As the American scene incorporated hostility toward women, so, too, did the Oaxacan one. Now, the local hip-hop scene is growing, thanks to online music platforms. These women want a part in shaping it. @mychivas took this photo of Mare Advertencia Lirika performing in Mexico. Visit the link in our profile to see more.
